ORS Interactive, Inc., incorporated in 1999 in the State Virginia, has administered and issued Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Cards since 2004 through a consortium agreement between Arlington County, City of Alexandria and Fairfax County.

Important notice!

Licensed Food Establishments in Arlington County, City of Alexandria, and Fairfax County are required by law to have someone who is a Certified Food Protection Manager, also referred to as a PIC (Person in Charge) by local Health Departments, who is in “immediate” control during all operating hours. Certified Food Protection Managers must take and pass an accredited Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. If Health Department Inspectors or other Officials request verification of Food Protection Manager Certification, all PICs must be ready to produce the original certificate documenting their Food Protection Manager Certification along with a valid, government-issued photo ID that verifies their identify.

    Those with Northern Virginia Food Manager ID Cards issued by ORS need only present their valid Food Manager ID Card. Printed on a durable plastic and covered by a protective overlay, the Food Manager ID includes a color photo, type of Food Manager Certification Exam passed, where the exam was proctored, and the expiration date.
    ORS also administers the LIMITED Food Manager Exam and issues the LIMITED Northern Virginia Food Manager ID for persons working at Licensed Food Establishments which serve only pre-prepared foods such as frankfurters, packaged foods heated microwave ovens, etc. Note: Local Health Departments make the determination if a STANDARD or LIMITED Food Protection Manager Certificate is appropriate for each Licensed Food Establishment.
    As a means of providing a small measure of relief to Licensed Food Establishments and people working in restaurants and foodservice operations during the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery (when most hospitality businesses including our own have struggled mightily), ORS Interactive, Inc., is revising prices and service offerings for Food Manager ID Cards, One-Day (6-Hour) Food Safety Exam Preparation Classes, and Food Protection Manager Certification Exams in our video-proctored, Computer Testing Center (which provides immediate results).
    ORS Interactive is placing an even greater on training and remediation—now and in the future. We have changed our policies for “re-taking / auditing” our One-Day (6 Hour) Food Safety Exam Preparation Class to allow those who take the Class and fail the Exam to “re-take / audit” the Class an unlimited number of times without extra cost. We have found this to be successful on a limited basis and are extending this benefit to all our One Day (6-Hour) Food Safety Class participants. We’re also dropping the cost for re-taking the ServSafe Certified Food Protection Manager Exam from $70 to $35 for as many attempts as required to successfully pass the Exam.

  • What is the difference between Limited and Standard Food Manager Cards?

    There are two types of food managers certifications; STANDARD and LIMITED. Which one you get will depend on what kind of work you do.
    Standard Food Managers certifications are required for most facilities which prepare and serve food (including most restaurants, bars, cafeterias, food trucks, bakeries, and food stands). Your must pass a recognized Food Protection Manager Certification Exam to get the Standard Food Manager Certification. All restaurants and foodservice establishments which are not classified as “Limited” by their local Health Department are required to have at least one person on premise at all times who holds a Standard Food Protection Manager’s Certification, and can produce either the original certificate or a NVCFM Photo ID card.
    Limited Food Manager’s Cards are required for facilities defined as “those which typically serve hotdogs, prepackaged foods, or other types of food that are not potentially hazardous.” You must pass a Limited Food Protection Manager Certification Exam at the ORS Interactive office to get a Limited Food Manager Certification.
    It is the responsibility of each person applying for a Standard Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card or a Limited Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card to know the correct classification of their establishment. Those who are uncertain of their establishment’s classification should contact their local Health Department before making application for a Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card.

  • How do I apply for a Limited Food Manager Card?

    1: To acquire a LIMITED Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card, it is necessary to take and pass the Limited Food Manager’s Exam. This can be done only at ORS Interactive, and no other tests will be accepted (see testing hours and details). You will need to bring a valid, government-issued photo ID, and $20 for the test (cash, credit card, and company check accepted). This can be done on a walk-in basis up to a half-hour before the office closes.The address is:3240 Wilson Blvd Suite 100Arlington, VA 22201(inside "Vast" studio and co-working space)
    2: Once you have passed the Limited Food Manager’s Exam (with a score of 70% or higher) ORS Interactive will take your photo and issue your Limited NVCFM card for $40 (cash, credit card, and company check accepted).

  • How do I apply for a Standard Food Manager Card?

    1: To acquire a Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card, it is necessary to take and pass an approved Certified Food Protection Manager’s Exam in a proctored testing environment. ORS Interactive offers the ServSafe Food Manager Exam for $109 (which includes the card upon passing for FREE! —see here for details). Valid food manager certificates from Prometric, NRFSP, StateFoodSafety.com, AAA Food Safety, AlwaysFoodSafe and 360Training are also recognized.
    2: If you tested at any other location than ORS Interactive, and have passed a recognized and approved certified food safety manager’s exam, you must bring your valid, original certificate into the ORS Interactive office, along with a valid, government-issued photo ID, and $40 (cash, credit card, and company check accepted).     3: Once you have brought the necessary materials, ORS Interactive will take your picture and issue your card immediately. Your card will be valid for five years from the date you passed the certified food managers exam.

The Code of the County of Fairfax, Virginia requires all food establishments operating within the County to be under the immediate control of a Certified Food Manager during all hours of operation. Arlington County, Virginia and the City of Alexandria, Virginia have similar codes in place. The ultimate objective is to improve the health and well-being of the general public and provide additional protection against outbreaks of foodborne illness and other afflictions/health conditions directly related to food safety and sanitation.
ORS Interactive, Inc. administers an approved Certified Food Manager Exam (the ServSafe Food Protection Manager’s Exam) and provides proctored testing services and immediate results for English, Chinese, and Spanish exams taken on a computer.

Results taken with paper and pencil exams (this option is available for all exams but required for Korean, Japanese, and French Canadian) typically arrive within 7 to 10 days after the exam is administered.
The cost for each approved Food Safety Manager Exam is $109 and includes required test proctoring services and the Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager's ID card (after passing the exam). No reservations or appointments are required (no need to worry about missed exam appointments or fees for cancelling or changing exam appointments) as they are with other test providers / administrators.
Walk-in service is provided from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. If you are taking an exam, be sure to arrive at least two hours before closing.
