Issuance of a New Standard Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager (NVCFM) Card

The Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card has been issued by ORS Interactive since 2003. The Photo ID Certificate / Card serves as proof that the cardholder’s identity has been verified and the cardholder has taken and passed either an ANSI nationally-accredited “STANDARD” Exam or a recognized “LIMITED” Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. The Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card is recognized by Health Departments in Fairfax County, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, Prince William County, and other entities.

“STANDARD” vs. “LIMITED” Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card

There are two types of Food Protection Manager Certifications – “STANDARD” and “LIMITED”. Which one you get will depend on what kind of work you do. All restaurants and food service establishments in Northern Virginia are required to have a PIC (Person in Charge) onsite during all operating hours who holds a Food Protection Manager Certification and can produce either a valid, original Food Protection Manager Certification or a Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card
STANDARD” Food Protection Manager Certifications are required for most facilities that prepare and serve food (including most restaurants, bars, cafeterias, food trucks, bakeries, and food stands). You must pass an “ANSI-nationally accredited” Food Protection Manager Certification Exam to get the “STANDARD” Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card..
LIMITED” Food Protection Manager Photo ID Certificates / Cards apply to facilities defined as “those which typically serve hotdogs, prepackaged foods, or other types of food that are not potentially hazardous.” You must pass the “LIMITED” Food Protection Manager Certification Exam administered by ORS Interactive to secure a “LIMITED” Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card.
It is the responsibility of each person applying for a “STANDARD” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card or a “LIMITED” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card to know the correct classification of their establishment. Those who are uncertain of their establishment’s classification should contact their local Health Department before making an application for a Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card.

How to Apply for the “STANDARD” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card

Appointments for “STANDARD” Certified Food Manager Photo ID Certificates/Cards are available on a scheduled basis (every 30 minutes) from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Wednesday, and the second Saturday of every month. 
Advance payment is not required to schedule an appointment for a “STANDARD” Certificate/Card. You must bring a government-issued ID and an original copy of your “accredited” Food Protection Manager Certification. The cost for the “STANDARD” Certified Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card (good for 5 years unless your Certification expires before 5 years) is $40 payable in cash, or credit/debit card.

    Requirements for the “STANDARD” Northern Virginia Certified Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card
    1: To acquire a “STANDARD” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card, it is necessary to take and pass an ANSI-nationally accredited Food Protection Manager Certification Exam in a proctored testing environment. ORS Interactive offers the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam for $109 (see here for details), although valid Food Protection Manager Certifications from Prometric, NRFSP, Always Food Safe/StateFoodSafety.com, AAA Food Safety, and 360Training are also recognized and can be used to secure a STANDARD Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card.
    2: If you tested at any other location than ORS Interactive and have passed an ANSI-nationally accredited Food Protection Manager Certification Exam, including through ORS Interactive, you must bring your valid, original Food Protection Manager Certification to the ORS Interactive Training & Testing Center, along with a valid, government-issued photo ID, and $40 (cash, credit or debit card, and company checks accepted).
    3: Once you have provided the necessary materials and they have been verified by ORS Interactive, we take your picture and immediately issue your Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card. The Certificate/Card is valid for five years from the date your Food Protection Manager Certification was issued.

How to Apply for the “LIMITED” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card

Appointments for “LIMITED” Food Safety Exam (20 questions) and Northern Virginia “LIMITED” Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card are available on a scheduled basis (every 30 minutes) from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Wednesday and the second Saturday of every month. 
Advance payment is not required to schedule an appointment for a “LIMITED” Certificate/Card. You must bring a government-issued ID to verify your identity before you can take the “LIMITED” Exam. Cost is $20 for the “LIMITED” Exam and $40 (for those who pass the Exam) for the “LIMITED” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card which is good for 5 years. Total cost = $60. Cash, credit or debit card, and company checks are accepted.

    2. Once you have passed the Limited Food Manager’s Exam (with a score of 70% or higher) ORS Interactive takes your photo and issues your “LIMITED” Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card which is valid for 5 years. The cost is $40, bringing the total cost to $60 for those who pass the Exam (cash, credit or debit card, and company checks accepted).

All Licensed Food Establishments in Northern Virginia are required to have a Certified Food Safety / Food Protection Manager serving as the PIC (Person in Charge) during all operating hours.

Food Protection Managers who take and pass a recognized Food Protection Manager Certification Exam must always be ready to present an original copy of their Food Safety / Food Protection Manager Certification to Health Inspectors, and they may be required to present an original, government-issued photo ID. While the Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate / Card is no longer mandatory in all jurisdictions, it is still heavily utilized by those who don’t want to carry both their original Food Safety / Food Protection Manager Certification and an original, government-issued ID with them every day. Many people also use the Northern Virginia Food Manager Photo ID Certificate/Card as a secondary form of Photo ID for the purpose of opening lines of credit, bank accounts, library cards, social services, picking up kids at school, etc.

“Private” On-Site Food Safety Exam Preparation Classes & ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exams
ORS Interactive also delivers “Private” On-Site Food Safety Exam Preparation Classes & ANSI-nationally accredited ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exams (available in English and Spanish) at your restaurant, food service operation, hotel, or other facility. As few as 6 students are required for a “Private” Class and the total cost depends on size and scale of each client’s needs. Additionally, content for each Class can be adapted or customized to meet the specific needs of a particular company or organization. For example, ORS Interactive has specialized content for organizations that have volunteers working in their kitchens and organizations practicing AMC (Active Managerial Control).
Classes typically run for 5 hours, followed immediately by the proctored administration of the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. Some flexibility exists as to the times and length of each Class, based on your needs. Everyone who passes the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Exam (score of 70% or better) receives a ServSafe e-Certification which is available later the same day via the ServSafe website (send to yourself or anyone in an email or print as a PDF on any printer). Contact ORS Interactive to discuss scheduling a “Private” On-Site Food Safety Exam Preparation Class & ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam at your location. 
Organizations sometimes partner with other operators or even a group of operators in coordinating delivery of “Private” On-Site Food Safety Exam Preparation Classes & ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exams. It’s preferable to conduct On-Site Classes in a suitable training facility or meeting room. Basic requirements for On-Site Classes include: a suitable space for the delivery of both the Class and Exam that is appropriate in size for the number of people to be trained and conductive to a distraction-free learning environment. The space also needs to have a large screen TV or projector with an HDMI input, reinforced sound, and a strong WiFi connection for administration of the ServSafe Food Protection. Manager Certification Exam on laptops provided by ORS Interactive or computers provided On-site by the host organization.
